Copyediting includes many of the elements of proofreading, and more. When copyediting your content, I will make sure that all of your grammar, spelling, punctuation, stylistic elements, mechanics, and facts are correct and consistent. In addition to fact-checking, assigning heading levels, and fixing art that may be misplaced, I will also offer suggestions on how you might improve your clarity, tone of voice, transitions, and more. In addition, I work hard to ensure that I retain your voice when copyediting your content.
When proofreading your content, I will correct errors related to spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting. For example, I will check that all of the elements within your manuscript such as headers, level heads, the table of contents, page numbers, word breaks, end-of-line breaks, page breaks, tables, and references are consistent and accurate. Although proofreading is often confused with copyediting, this process typically takes place after your content has been edited and the page proofs have been prepared by the designer.
While copyediting and proofreading focus on local revision, developmental editing focuses more on global revision. In other words, developmental editing involves offering suggestions on how you might expand or elaborate on your ideas to get your point across, improve your organization or word choice, and more generally, ensure that your content is as strong as possible for your targeted audience. In addition to providing comments within the manuscript or text, after reading through your content, I will provide you with a “letter to the author,” where I discuss the strengths of your content and provide some “big picture” suggestions for revision.
